Piso Fare!

I have been seeing some P1-fare sale of both Airasia and Cebu Pacific valid for travel next year, but I have not bought any ticket yet.  With my first-born now in college, it is not as easy to pick a date since being absent from class might mean a failing grade.  And because we might be doing a land trip instead next year.

But it so tempting to buy, even for just me and my husband! If only it's that easy, hahahah!

Keeping Safe at Home During Typhoon

Last September 19, we were on high alert at home ready for when the water rises and flood reaches inside the house, like it did with Ondoy.  Thankfully, flood water only reached the gate, and we had continuous supply of power and cable and internet.  My husband and I tried to go to work but came back on when we couldn't find a way with out motorcycle and decided to just take a leave and be safe at home.
So, now safely and warmly stucked at home, we planned the meals!  And we what we had were all best for the rainy weather.  We had a cup of noodles for breakfast, sinigang na bangus for lunch and then ginataan for merienda.  Then we topped it off with tsamporado.  The best!

Do-It-Yourself Hot Oil Session

Earlier this month, my daughter and I had a DIY Hot Oil session at home, and it was so simple and fun!
Here are the instructions on how to do it:
1. Prepare your oil.  I used coconut oil that I made myself.  You just need to heat the shredded coconut on low fire, stir until the oil comes out and the shredded coconut turns brown.  Then filter the oil and keep in a bottle or sealed container. It smells so good, good enough to eat!
2. Using a cotton, apply oil to the scalp, the roots and the end of the hair.
3. Massage the scalp to apply oil to all the areas.
4. Cover your hair with a shower cap for 2 hours.
5. Shampoo your hair and use conditioner if desired.
6. Voila! Enjoy your smooth and fragrant hair!

How much did it cost me? Around P20.00 for the shredded coconut, and lots and lots of fun with my daughter!

Dinner at Jay-J's Inasal

To belatedly celebrate the birthday of Ehms, the Superfriends met at Metrowalk to have dinner at Bancheto.  Unfortunately, there was no more bancheto there so we opted to have dinner at Jay-J's Inasal instead.
We opted to get their Family Meal Package good for 4-5 persons and it was more than enough for the 6 of us.  The food was delicious as always.  We had the shrimp, Sinigang, Pusit and seafood ginataan, as well as the deep-fried plala.  We added Pansit Canton as birthday noodles and we were set.  There was also the delicious turon for dessert (no picture, hahaha!)
The whole costs us about P1,980 at it was not bad at all for around P250 per pax.

Dinner At Dampa sa Libis

In celebration of her birthday and her recently awarded scholarship to Germany, our friend Rona treated us to dinner in Dampa sa Libis. The last time all 6 of us were together was in February when we went to Cambodia and Vietnam.  So dinner was a very enjoyable affair.
Rona and her husband Rodney was early, so they already ordered our dinner. They bought the shrimp and the pork from the market and had it cooked.  It was ready to be served when we got there. We had shrimp in lemon butter sauce, grilled and sinigang pork, siomai, and the chopsuey (not in the photo).
It was actually my first time to eat in Dampa, but I had fun so I am surely going to come back for another dinner soon!

Fatboys Pizza: Metrodeal Promo Review

I bought one Metrodeal voucher for 2-15" Fatboys Pizza for 299 and decided to redeem it last Sunday.  The deal is for 2 pizzas: Hawaian and Sausage and Mushroom and P299 seems like a good deal.
The Good:
1. Redemption was easy.  I went to the branch in Puregold Agora and handed the voucher to the girl,  she wrote it down and I signed, and voila! We have the pizza after 10 minutes.
The Bad:
1. There was no sausage available for the Sausage and Ham Pizza but since I wanted to try other flavors, I agreed with the girl to just replace the mushroom with pineapple. Bad combination.
2. The pizza was not delicious. Yes it was hot, yes it was nicely cooked but no, it was not awesome, nor really good nor was it anywhere near delicious.
3. The branch, which was in the food court of Puregold Agora did not look appealing.  I was surprised when I handed the voucher to the girl in front of the counter, and then she sat on the counter and throw her feet up, to slide to the other side, to get inside the counter!  The door under the counter was too small for a grow person to pass. But hey, maybe other branches looks just fine.

So, did I get good value for my money? No. As my son said, I should have bought from 3M pizza instead.

How to Plant a Malunggay Tree

I asked my friend for a cutting from their Malunggay tree so that we can plant one in our garden.  She asked their helper to cut a branch or small trunk of the Malunggay tree.  When I brought it home, my mom took out some of the skin and planted it in one big pail.
We filled it with soil and watered it and just left it alone.  Please note that this method of planting Malunggay tree is not as sure as planting from seeds but this will have to do for now.
I will let you know soon if our Malunggay tree will make it and maybe we can enjoy the fruits of our labor soon!

Friday Letters

Dear Money, can you be a little more forthcoming? I know I sound needy, but I need you. To those people who says money can't buy happiness, I don't believe you.  But I would never know, hahaha. But anyway, the universe will provide.  Dear School, I know that it's my fault that I came back when I have a perfectly happy career but you are my unfinished business.  And since I am not a quitter, I have to finish.  But not being a quitter doesn't mean that I am also not a whiner, hehehe. So why so many requirements??? Dear Mountain, any mountain, I miss you! I need to climb one soon or I will go crazy.  I know I do not exactly have the time and the weather is not that perfect, but I really need to go up and see a mountain soon, very soon! Dear Me Time, I need you too. I need to feel pampered. Dear You Who Shall Not Be Named, I expect the love I think I deserve and at this moment, I do not deserve this! So this set-up is what's best for now. But I am extremely pissed! Dear Blogs, thank you for keeping me sane.  Sometimes, my thoughts are so jumbled that I have to put them out there and see how whiny I have become.  Since I don't think people read this anyway, I can say my piece, just because I can, hahaha.  Not too responsible I know. Oh well. Dear Kids, thank you for loving me unconditionally. I love you with all that I can.

Hair Rebond at Wellecut Salon: A Review

I bought a voucher for hair rebond at Metrodeal since it's been more than a year since my last hair treatment.  The voucher was P699 for a hair rebond, wash, cut and blow dry at Wellecut Salon. So I made an appointment at 3pm yesterday and was there at 3:05 since it was just on the building across my office. I waited for around 30 minutes as the two attendants were busy with other clients. At 4:00 pm, my session began and I was done by a little after 7pm. And the result was gorgeous!
So, first there was the treatment, which was left for some time. And then some more treatment was added, and then my hair was washed. Then it was blow-dried, then it was ironed. Then it was treated once more, the washed once more, and then blow-dried and ironed for the last time.  The service was not hurried, and the attendant's touch was very light and relaxing.  They have free-wifi too so I was busy with my phone and tablet the whole time that I didn't mind the wait and the process!
I love their service, and the professionalism of my attendant, and that they are located just across my office so very convenient!

Wellecut Salon is located at:
LG-32, CityLand Megaplaza, ADB Avenue Ortigas, Pasig

Counting Calories

I was supposed to be on this 500-calorie a day diet and you want to know what 500 calories like? Yep, its above, and a little more.  A Great Taste 3-in-1 White Coffee is 85 calories, a boiled egg is 77, a Magic Flakes crackers is 130, and the Okra is 32 calories.  That is what I ate up until I stop counting!  I was beginning to have a headache and so I ate. I had turon and another cup of coffee.  I was good up until this point because I exercised for one hour, but come dinner, I went home to Paksiw na Pata, and all traces of counting calories all went out the window.

It is tedious to count calories and it sometimes take the fun out of eating.  But it still pays to know how much calories I consume a day.  Maybe I am having difficulty now because I am not used to this limited intake, but I hope to be able to do it one of these days.

Pope Francis' Top 10 Secrets to Happiness

In an interview, Pope Francis listed his Top 10 tips for bringing greater joy to one's life:

1. "Live and let live." Everyone should be guided by this principle, he said, which has a similar expression in Rome with the saying, "Move forward and let others do the same."
2. "Be giving of yourself to others." People need to be open and generous toward others, he said, because "if you withdraw into yourself, you run the risk of becoming egocentric. And stagnant water becomes putrid."
3. "Proceed calmly" in life. The pope, who used to teach high school literature, used an image from an Argentine novel by Ricardo Guiraldes, in which the protagonist -- gaucho Don Segundo Sombra -- looks back on how he lived his life.
"He says that in his youth he was a stream full of rocks that he carried with him; as an adult, a rushing river; and in old age, he was still moving, but slowly, like a pool" of water, the pope said. He said he likes this latter image of a pool of water -- to have "the ability to move with kindness and humility, a calmness in life."
4. "A healthy sense of leisure." The pleasures of art, literature and playing together with children have been lost, he said.
"Consumerism has brought us anxiety" and stress, causing people to lose a "healthy culture of leisure." Their time is "swallowed up" so people can't share it with anyone.
Even though many parents work long hours, they must set aside time to play with their children; work schedules make it "complicated, but you must do it," he said.
Families must also turn off the TV when they sit down to eat because, even though television is useful for keeping up with the news, having it on during mealtime "doesn't let you communicate" with each other, the pope said.
5. Sundays should be holidays. Workers should have Sundays off because "Sunday is for family," he said.
6. Find innovative ways to create dignified jobs for young people. "We need to be creative with young people. If they have no opportunities they will get into drugs" and be more vulnerable to suicide, he said.
"It's not enough to give them food," he said. "Dignity is given to you when you can bring food home" from one's own labor.
7. Respect and take care of nature. Environmental degradation "is one of the biggest challenges we have," he said. "I think a question that we're not asking ourselves is: 'Isn't humanity committing suicide with this indiscriminate and tyrannical use of nature?'"
8. Stop being negative. "Needing to talk badly about others indicates low self-esteem. That means, 'I feel so low that instead of picking myself up I have to cut others down,'" the pope said. "Letting go of negative things quickly is healthy."
9. Don't proselytize; respect others' beliefs. "We can inspire others through witness so that one grows together in communicating. But the worst thing of all is religious proselytism, which paralyzes: 'I am talking with you in order to persuade you,' No. Each person dialogues, starting with his and her own identity. The church grows by attraction, not proselytizing," the pope said.
10. Work for peace. "We are living in a time of many wars," he said, and "the call for peace must be shouted. Peace sometimes gives the impression of being quiet, but it is never quiet, peace is always proactive" and dynamic.

More Fun in the Philippines Indeed!

In the Huffington article, 8 Reasons The Philippines Is The Best Tropical Destination No One Ever Talks About, I am proud to say that I have been to or have experienced some items on the list!

I have been to Bohol to see the Chocolate Hills, to Puerto Princesa to see the Underground River, and have hiked two volcanoes, Taal and Pinatubo! I have been to Boracay, Coron and El Nido where the beaches are just so achingly beautiful!
its raining but it's still so beautiful in El Nido
I have swan with the Butandings too in Oslob, Cebu!

I have witnessed a sea of clouds in Mt. Pulag!

and of course love the jeepney, hahahaha (not toploading, just for picture)!

I can go on and on about how much more fun it is in the Philippines, but you should go and see for yourself.  I know I have and will continue to explore our beautiful country!

Nothings Beats Pinoy Food

Kare-kare, Sinigang sa miso, sisig and bagnet

When we went to Cambodia and Vietnam last February on a 7-day trip, we enjoyed tasting local cuisines and delicacy.  There were dishes that we loved, and there were dishes that we were just happy to taste to educate our palate.  There were noodles and rice since we Asians east almost the same thing.  But we missed Pinoy food just the same.  I asked my mom to cook Sinigang Na Baboy for lunch, when we arrived in the morning.  My friend Ehms went straight to Jollibee (that Pinoy fast food giant) and Rona asked her mom to make Diningding, an Ilocano dish. Seeing this pictures on my computer now, which I remember are dishes that we ordered ay Kalye Juan, just reminds me that while I enjoy burgers, pasta and salads, I am Pinly through and through when it comes to my food preference!

May Karapatan Akong Magalit

Infographic: Drunk Driving and Penalties

Do you know the penalties for drunk driving based on RA 10586? You should know this! In fact, everyone should know this! Penalties are as follows:
  1. If you violate RA 10586, the penalties range from a minimum of 3 months to a maximum of 20 years imprisonment. The fine ranges from P20,000 to P500,000.
  2. If you own a non-professional license then there is a 12-month suspension on the first offense and a permanent revocation for the second.
  3. If you own a professional license then there is only permanent revocation for a single offense.

You Know Why It's Hard to Diet?

So I am overweight by at least 10 lbs. At least. But I am working on it. I try to go the gym everyday and do at least a 3-km run and 25 minutes of core body work out.  I try to refrain from eating dinner, or eat as little as possible if I can't help it. And I have managed to lose maybe 1-2 lbs for the past 2 weeks already. However, things are not working out so well!
Because of these!  The problem with announcing your diet and desire to lose weight at the office means setting yourself for failure! There were several birthday celebrations during the week, as well as pasalubong from officemates who came from vacation abroad so it means free food! And you can't say no. Well, you can. But I can't.  Hahaha!

So I will try and measure my weight again later this afternoon and see how I fared this week.

Ibaba sa Lupa

Anti-pork song. Kontra sa kanta ni Bong Revilla.

Ibaba sa Lupa

Sa dinami-dami-dami
Ng naging mga pangulo, yea
Kailan nga ba bumuti
Ang kapalaran ng mga tao

Sa mga ulap ng kongreso
May pakpak ang mga tao
Sa alapaap ng palasyo
Lumulutang ang trono

Ibaba sa lupa, ibaba sa lupa
Ibaba sa lupa, ibaba sa lupa
Ibaba sa lupa, ibaba sa lupa
Ibaba sa lupa

Ibaba sa lupa, ibaba sa lupa
Ibaba sila sa lupa, ibaba sila sa lupa
Ibaba sa lupa, ibaba sa lupa
Ibaba sila sa lupa, ibaba sila sa lupa
Ibaba sa lupa, ibaba sa lupa
Ibaba sila sa lupa, ibaba sila sa lupa
Ibaba sa lupa, ibaba
Ibaba sila sa lupa

Kung sino pa ang naturingan
Na mga lingkod ng bayan, yea
Ay siya pa’ng napipiringan
Sa aba nating kalagayan

Hindi kalakal ng higante
Kundi daing ng marami
Pagkain, tubig at kuryente
Matrikula’t pamasahe

Ibaba sa lupa, ibaba sa lupa
Ibaba sila sa lupa, ibaba sila sa lupa
Ibaba sa lupa, ibaba sa lupa
Ibaba sila sa lupa, ibaba sila sa lupa
Ibaba sa lupa, ibaba sa lupa
Ibaba sila sa lupa, ibaba sila sa lupa
Ibaba sa lupa, ibaba
Ibaba sila sa lupa

Ang sana ay pag-asang
Kakampi nating gobyerno
Na dapat sana ay
Sa publiko ay nagseserbisyo
Ang kamalas-malasang
Naging atin pang impyerno
Bayan ay ginagatasang
Para lang nilang negosyo
Sila palagi’ng napipili
Sila palagi’ng nananatili
Paano gaganda ang buhay
Sa lupang pansamantala
Kung sa langit naghahari ay

Di makarinig, di makakita
Ang mga tenga’t mata
Di pumipintig, di makadama
Ang dibdib sa daigdig ng madla

Ibaba sa lupa, ibaba sa lupa
Ibaba sila sa lupa, ibaba sila sa lupa
Ibaba sa lupa, ibaba sa lupa
Ibaba sila sa lupa, ibaba sila sa lupa
Ibaba sa lupa, ibaba sa lupa
Ibaba sila sa lupa, ibaba sila sa lupa

Staycation: Contemporary Hotel

Contemporary Hotel (image from Agoda)
Last Good Friday, my family and I decided to stay overnight at Contemporary Hotel in Araneta Avenue in Quezon City.  I bought a room from Agoda at P1,499 and added an extra bed for P500 upon checkin.  We had the room below, with two queen sized beds and the extra bed on the left.  It was more than enough for my family!
My criteria for selecting the hotel was: it has to have a pool, it has to be near and it has to be cheap. Contemporary Hotel all have those.  The hotel is just 3-5 minutes from our house and it has a hotel so it was good enough for us.  The only drawback is the TV was too small, and we had no wifi at the room (only at the lobby) and the signal on our pocket wifi was too weak.
So we had a grand time at the hotel and then we were home after lunch, hahaha. My kids wanted to stay one more night but I said we will plan it some other time. Yes, our short staycation was fun, and I did not spend for gas, so it was indeed value for money!

1489 Cableway Resort

Last Saturday, my family, my sister's family and their friends went on an overnight swimming at 1489 Cableway Resort in Binangonan, Rizal.  We were there from 5pm of Saturday until 3am of Sunday.  The kids and the kids at hear had a great time! Unfortunately, I only have a few photos of the resort.

Entrance fee was P150 but they have a 10+1 promo. We were also able to get a discount for the cottage for our group. I think the other group opted not to avail of the 10+1 promo and opted to get a cottage for only P150, instead of P500.
There are 3 pools: a 2-ft kiddie pool with fountain, a 3.6ft-5ft pool with slide and a 3ft-4ft pool.  They have several shower areas and there were 2 or 3 P5 karaoke rooms.  The cottages all have their individual grilling station and socket, and a common wash area.  The resort was not too crowded when we get there and they have strict times on opening the pool areas and closing them for pool maintenance.  There were lifeguards present at every pool and several ones at the gate willing to help carry our stuff.  They also have a convenience store inside that sells liquor, ice and soft drinks and even sandwiches.

I love that the resort was too crowded, maybe because we were there for an overnight swimming. But the resort is covered in trees which I love very much!

How to get there:
From Taytay Puregold, ride a jeepney going to Binangonan and it will pass by the resort already.  You may also check out this blog for more photos and directions.

How to Recycle a Broken Plant Pot

I saw this on 9gag and I was so amazed at this idea of recycling a broken plant pot! It think its prettier than just with a simple pot.  The dish garden design is so nice. I love it and I am sure to try and do it should one of my plants pots break.

Lent Diet

For the first time in my life, and for this Lent season, I made a decision to fast: I will not eat meat nor eat any chips. And 20 days into the fasting, I am happy to report that I am able to do it! Despite having several family occasions where we have to eat out , like during the kid's recognition day and Drex's graduation and birthday.  At first I thought it was going to be hard, but thanks to the help and encouragement of my family and friends, it is quite manageable.  I eat fish and just the soup when it is a meat dish.  I totally avoid chips of any kind! And I am halfway through now!  But unfortunately, I cannot report any weight loss, hehehehe!

Some of my meatless dishes are above: seafood pizza and pasta (eating out), my pasta with corned tuna, boiled marble potatoes, nutella(eating out), sopas ( i just didn't eat the meat), eggplant dish and cucumber! Its actually good for my digestion if I don't eat meat because I don't have gallbladder anymore so I wish I will have lesser craving for meat after lent.

A Staycation!

Instead of driving at least 3 hours from Manila, braving traffic and irritated passengers, I have decided that for this summer, we will just for a nice hotel with a pool and enjoy a STAYCATION! My criteria for a nice hotel would be:

1. Can fit 3 adults and 2 kids aged 10 and 11
2. Has a pool
3. Offers free buffet breakfast

Those are just my requirements and I am now scouring deal sites to score a nice deal!

Eating Right!

my diet

After gaining more than 10 lbs on my already "just a little below overweight" ideal weight, I am now officially overweight.  I was just too lazy to exercise for more than 3 weeks, and I confess that I really did not watch my weight.  I ate as much as I want, and most of the time, it was really more than enough! I feasted on chips and was continuously snacking, so it was really no surprise that I gained that 10 lbs.  Then when I went abroad for a week, I also ate too much! Well, who can resist Pho, Banh Mi and all those Khmer cooking?

Anyway, my decision to lose weight is not really only out of vanity.  I have an El Nido trip in 4 months, but my immediate problem is that my office clothes do not fit anymore! Yup, I am bursting at the seams, it seems! And coupled with the fear of having hypertension and diabetes (which runs in the family) I decided to take matter into may hands again.

So I am now back at my daily gym routine and I changed my diet to exclude meat for the whole duration of lent and just eat fruits, vegetables and fish.  I am happy to announce that I already feel lighter and I don't feel as bloated anymore.  I know that this must become a lifestyle and I hope to be able to sustain eating sensibly and exercising! If only I can cut more on carbs, then I know I will get better results soon!

PUPCET 2014: January 25, 2014

Tomorrow, January 25, 2014 is the first examination day for students hoping to become Isko or Iska of the Polytechnic University of the Philippines. I was once a Iskolar ng Bayan, and I hope that my son gets to be one as well.  So tomorrow, he will be one of the thousands who will take the entrance test and hopefully, and God-willing pass it.  Here are just some important reminders that I would like to share, which is part of the test permit that you will have to bring with you tomorrow.  And may I just say, parents are not allowed inside the campus! You are a big girl/boy now, you can do it on your own! And, classes has been suspended at PUP on Saturday to make way for the test.

Important Reminders:
Going to PUP Sta Mesa campys via public and private vehicle:

Going to PUP Sta. Mesa Campus via LRT Line 3:
Map of the PUP Campus:

So good luck to all examinees and  may the odds be ever in your favor!

The Feast of the Sto. Nino

Yesterday was the Feast of the Sto Nino and the same with many places in the country, there was a procession in our barangay after the mass.  The procession was attended with people from all ages, each caryying his or her Sto Nino, and dancing to the fun beat of the drum.  The playful atmosphere is a reminder for us to remain childlike, in faith and in life, to the child Jesus.  Pit Senor! New Bike for the Kiddos!
